Mobile communications is a term used to broadly refer to portable communications technology. This definition would encompass all sorts equipment including but not limited to laptop and palmtop computers and net books, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, smart phones, global positioning system (GPS) devices etc. A mobile phone is a portable electronic instrument that is used for long distance communication. Mobile phones are able to support a myriad of services including but not limited to short messaging service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS), general packet radio services (GPRS), email, blue tooth, wireless application protocol (WAP), internet browsing, built-in and downloadable games, infrared and voice mail box etc. As evident from the name, it is possible to network a mobile device to a network at home or work while traveling to avoid disruptions in transmission of information and work.

Technologies used by Mobile Devices
 Mobile devices employ a number of communication technologies to keep you connected at all times. These include but are not limited to;

•    Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) Networks - refer to networks in which nodes are connected without wires and information is transmitted over electromagnetic waves.

•    Bluetooth - is a system for networking that connects and transmits information over mobile devices.

•    Second generation (2G), third generation (3G), fourth generation (4G), global system for mobile communications (GSM) and general packet radio service (GPRS) data services.

•    Dial-up - is a system of data networking services that employs telephones and modems.

•    Virtual private networks (VPN)
- provide secure access to a personal or private network for transmission of information.

Benefits of Mobile Comm.
Mobile communications offer a myriad of benefits for both individual customers and companies some of which are discussed below;

•    Sophisticated solutions that link you with your home or office network offer increased flexibility especially for staff working in the field.

•    Mobile communications has positively impacted customer satisfaction by making their lives easier.

•    By decreasing disruptions in work especially while traveling, mobile communications improves efficiency and motivation of employees and has a positive impact on the bottom line of the business/organization.

•    Mobile comm. also help increase your customer base by giving them options to complete business transactions online. This increases your clientele by including customers who were purchasing the product/services online.

Disadvantages of Mobile Communications
Along with the benefits discussed above, there are a number of disadvantages of mobile communications some of which are discussed below;

•    Mobile comm. require substantial investment in terms of equipment and will require sophisticated (and expensive) equipment making it impractical for smaller setups to opt for it.

•    Un-secure wireless networks can expose sensitive data and information to unauthorized users. Thus, it is very important to get your mobile communications system set up by IT professionals.
•    Staff would need to be trained in the use of mobile communications. In case of companies having a large staff, this would require substantial investment.
